Mac Data Recovery in London

Mac drive being prepared for data recovery

If your Mac won’t start, a drive has failed, or files have been deleted or erased, we can usually get them back. We recover data from every type of Mac, from PowerPC machines with IDE hard drives to the latest Apple silicon models.

How we do it depends on how your Mac stores its data. Initial advice is free; if we need to open your Mac to find out what has failed, that is booked in as a diagnostic at £45 + VAT (£54).

How recovery works, by type of Mac

Macs with a removable drive (most Macs made before 2016, and many iMacs up to 2019): we take the drive out and copy it on dedicated recovery equipment through a write-blocker, so nothing on it is changed. Failing hard drives are imaged sector by sector before we touch the files.

Macs with a T2 chip (2018–2020 Intel models): the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by the T2. It can’t be read anywhere else, so we repair the board until the Mac starts, then copy your files.

Apple silicon Macs (M1 onwards): the same applies. The data is tied to the original board, which is why we do board-level repair in-house rather than replacing boards.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you recover data from a Mac that won’t turn on?

Usually, yes. On older Macs we read the drive directly; on T2 and Apple silicon Macs we repair the board first, because that is the only way to unlock the data.

Should I try recovery software first?

Not if the drive is clicking, grinding or disappearing. Every attempt to read a failing drive can make recovery harder, so switch it off and bring it in.

Do you need my password?

Only if FileVault was switched on, or on T2 and Apple silicon Macs where the login password unlocks the storage.
