Mac Repair London carries out a keyboard replacement on the MacBook Pro 15-inch (2016–2019) from our Central London workshop, for home users and businesses.
The butterfly keyboard on the 15-inch fails like the 13-inch: sticky, repeating or dead keys. It’s riveted to the top case along with the battery, so the permanent fix is a new top case assembly, which includes a new battery. We check whether a clean will solve a single key first.
The 2018 and 2019 butterfly keyboards have a silicone membrane under the keys, which helps but doesn’t fully solve the problem.
About this model: The 15-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro (A1707 and A1990) packs a quad or six-core Intel CPU and Radeon Pro graphics into a thin body, which means heat. Add the butterfly keyboard and wearing display cables, and you have the main repair themes.
Signs it needs a keyboard replacement
- Sticky or repeating keys
- Keys not registering
- Broken keycaps
- Touch Bar issues
How we do it
With butterfly keyboards we first try a careful clean on individual failing keys, which sometimes solves it. If the switches themselves have failed, the lasting fix is a replacement top case assembly, which comes with a new keyboard and battery.
We fit UK-layout keyboards as standard and test every key, the backlight and Touch ID (where fitted) before returning the Mac.

Before you bring it in
Try an external keyboard first: if it works, your data and the rest of the Mac are probably fine. Note which keys misbehave and how.

Questions we’re often asked
What parts do you use?
We tell you before fitting whether a part is an Apple original, a tested part recovered from a donor machine, or a high-quality compatible part, and the price reflects which you choose.
Does the battery need replacing too?
Not always. On this model the battery is held with adhesive in the top case, so we test it first and only quote for it if it’s worn or damaged.
Do I pay if you can’t fix it?
No. If the repair isn’t possible, you don’t pay for it, and the free initial assessment costs nothing.
