The SSD is soldered. On the 2016–2017 A1707 it can sometimes be read through a service connector; on the 2018–2019 A1990 it’s encrypted by the T2 chip and only readable through the original board. We repair the board to recover your data.
The 2016–2017 A1707 has the same service connector as the 13-inch, so data can sometimes be read without a full repair.
About this model: The 15-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro (A1707 and A1990) packs a quad or six-core Intel CPU and Radeon Pro graphics into a thin body, which means heat. Add the butterfly keyboard and wearing display cables, and you have the main repair themes.

How we do it
For machines without the T2 chip we can sometimes read the soldered SSD through the service connector. For T2 machines, we repair the logic board to the point where the Mac starts, then copy your data off.
We recover documents, photos, video, Mail, Photos and iTunes/Music libraries, and project files from apps like Final Cut Pro, Logic and Adobe Creative Cloud.

Before you bring it in
Don’t run disk repair tools or reinstall macOS, as both can overwrite what we’re trying to save. Note which files matter most and bring your login password, which the encrypted storage needs.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you take the drive out and read it in another computer?
Not on this model. The storage is encrypted with keys held by the Mac’s own security hardware, so it can only be read through the original board. That’s why we repair the board rather than replace it.
