MacBook Pro 13-inch Thunderbolt 3 (2016–2020, Intel) Keyboard Replacement

Apple MacBook Pro

Need a keyboard replacement for your MacBook Pro 13-inch (2016–2020, Intel)? We carry out this work in-house at our London workshop, with a fixed quote before we start.

The 2016–2019 butterfly keyboards fail from dust and wear; Apple’s service programme has ended. The keyboard is riveted into the top case with the battery, so the proper repair is a full top case assembly. On the 2020 A2251 and A2289 with the Magic Keyboard, spills are the main cause of keyboard damage. We quote for the top case and tell you if a clean will do.

The 2019 butterfly keyboard used improved materials, but it can still fail. The 2020 A2251 and A2289 switched to scissor switches and are much more reliable.

About this model: The 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2016–2020 comes in a lot of variants: with or without the Touch Bar, two or four Thunderbolt ports, and butterfly keyboards up to 2019 then the scissor Magic Keyboard in 2020. From 2018 onwards they have the T2 security chip, which encrypts the soldered SSD.

Signs it needs a keyboard replacement

  • Keys sticking or double-typing
  • Dead keys
  • Keycaps broken
  • Touch Bar not responding

How we do it

With butterfly keyboards we first try a careful clean on individual failing keys, which sometimes solves it. If the switches themselves have failed, the lasting fix is a replacement top case assembly, which comes with a new keyboard and battery.

We fit UK-layout keyboards as standard and test every key, the backlight and Touch ID (where fitted) before returning the Mac.

Before you bring it in

Tell us which keys fail and whether there was a spill. On this model, a spill often affects more than the keyboard, and it’s cheaper to know that at the start.

Questions we’re often asked

What parts do you use?

We tell you before fitting whether a part is an Apple original, a tested part recovered from a donor machine, or a high-quality compatible part, and the price reflects which you choose.

Will my data be safe?

Yes. We don’t wipe your Mac unless you ask. On this model the storage is encrypted and tied to its original board, so we never swap the board without explaining what that would mean for your data.

How much does it cost?

See the price section above. We always quote before starting, and if we can’t fix it, you don’t pay for the repair.
