Need data recovery for your MacBook Pro 13-inch (2016–2020, Intel)? We carry out this work in-house at our London workshop, with a fixed quote before we start.
There’s no removable drive here. On 2016–2017 models without T2, the SSD is soldered but can sometimes be read through a service connector on the board. On 2018–2020 models with T2, the data is encrypted by the T2 chip, so the only way to recover it is to get the original logic board working. That’s where our component-level board repair matters.
On 2016–2017 models without T2, we may be able to read the SSD directly through the service connector without fully repairing the board. That can be faster and cheaper.
About this model: The 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2016–2020 comes in a lot of variants: with or without the Touch Bar, two or four Thunderbolt ports, and butterfly keyboards up to 2019 then the scissor Magic Keyboard in 2020. From 2018 onwards they have the T2 security chip, which encrypts the soldered SSD.
Signs it needs data recovery
- Dead MacBook with no backup
- Liquid damage
- Stuck in recovery
- Board fault after a drop
How we do it
For machines without the T2 chip we can sometimes read the soldered SSD through the service connector. For T2 machines, we repair the logic board to the point where the Mac starts, then copy your data off.
Whether it’s family photos, accounts, a thesis or a year of client projects, we list what we’ve recovered so you can check it before it’s copied to your new drive.

Before you bring it in
Stop using the Mac if a drive is clicking or it keeps restarting, as each attempt can make recovery harder. Make a list of the folders that matter most so we can prioritise them, and have your login password to hand, because the storage is encrypted.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you take the drive out and read it in another computer?
Not on this model. The storage is encrypted with keys held by the Mac’s own security hardware, so it can only be read through the original board. That’s why we repair the board rather than replace it.
Is there a warranty?
Yes, our repairs come with a warranty on the work and parts. Ask us for the terms that apply to your repair.
