MacBook Memory Upgrade

MacBook memory upgrade

The white and black MacBook (2006–2010) has two memory slots that are easy to reach, so it’s one of the simplest Macs to upgrade. The 12-inch MacBook and the MacBook Neo have soldered memory that can’t be changed.

What your model can take

  • 2006 Core Duo models: up to 2GB
  • 2007–2008 models: up to 4GB (some run 6GB)
  • 2009–2010 white unibody (A1342): up to 8GB
  • 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Neo: not upgradeable

How we do it

We check your exact model and the memory it already has, then fit a matched pair of tested modules. The memory is behind the battery on the 2006–2009 models and under the base on the A1342. Afterwards we run a memory test and confirm the full amount shows in System Information.

Pair it with an SSD

These MacBooks were sold with slow hard drives, so an SSD makes the biggest difference of all. See MacBook SSD upgrades.

Questions we’re often asked

Will more memory let my MacBook run newer macOS?

No, the macOS version depends on the model, not the memory. More memory does make the supported version run more smoothly.
