MacBook Air M1 (13-inch, 2020) Liquid Damage Repair

Apple MacBook Air

If your MacBook Air M1 needs liquid damage repair, our London technicians can help, usually with a quote on the same day you bring it in.

Fanless doesn’t mean sealed. Liquid gets through the keyboard to the board, where it corrodes quickly. Turn it off, don’t charge it and bring it in. We open it, clean the board ultrasonically, repair corroded parts and test the keyboard and trackpad.

On the M1 Air, charging problems are one of the most common signs of an earlier spill, sometimes appearing days or weeks later as corrosion spreads.

About this model: The M1 MacBook Air (A2337) is fanless, fast and very popular, which is why we see so many. Its weak spot is the screen: the thin lid cracks easily from pressure, often from earbuds or a pen left on the keyboard when it’s closed.

Signs it needs liquid damage repair

  • Won’t power on
  • Keys not working
  • Trackpad unresponsive
  • Charging erratic

How we do it

Time matters with a spill. Power it down, unplug it and resist the urge to test it: every time current flows through a wet board, corrosion speeds up.

In the workshop we take the machine apart, clean the logic board ultrasonically to remove residue from under chips, then repair or replace any corroded components. We test the keyboard, trackpad, battery and ports separately, as these are often damaged too.

On this model the keyboard is part of the top case, so if it’s damaged we’ll quote for the top case as a separate item so you can decide.

Before you bring it in

Keep it switched off and unplugged, open the lid into an upside-down V to drain it (for laptops), and bring it in as quickly as you can. Tell us what was spilled: sugary and salty drinks corrode faster than water.

From £165 + VAT for non-complex board repairs. Complex repairs (liquid, lightning or GPU faults) from £285 + VAT. The initial assessment and advice are free, as long as we don't need to open your Mac. If a technician needs to open it and spend time diagnosing the fault, or you need a report for an insurance claim, it is booked in as a diagnostic at £45 + VAT (£54). All prices are subject to inspection, and nothing is done without your approval.

Questions we’re often asked

Does it matter what was spilled?

Yes. Water is the least harmful; tea with sugar, coffee, juice, wine and beer leave sticky, conductive residue that corrodes faster.

Will my data be safe?

Yes. We don’t wipe your Mac unless you ask. On this model the storage is encrypted and tied to its original board, so we never swap the board without explaining what that would mean for your data.
