MacBook 12-inch Retina (2015–2017) Keyboard Replacement

Apple MacBook

If your MacBook 12-inch Retina needs a keyboard replacement, our London technicians can help, usually with a quote on the same day you bring it in.

The 12-inch MacBook was the first Mac with the butterfly keyboard, and it suffers from dust getting under keys so they stick or repeat. Apple’s keyboard service programme has now ended. The keyboard is part of the top case with the battery, so a proper fix means a new top case assembly. Sometimes a careful clean fixes a single sticky key, and we try that first.

About this model: The 12-inch MacBook (A1534) was Apple’s thinnest laptop: fanless, with one USB-C port and the first butterfly keyboard. That single port handles charging, data and video, so port faults are serious.

Signs it needs a keyboard replacement

  • Keys sticking or double-typing
  • Keys not registering
  • Keycaps broken off
  • Keyboard backlight failure

How we do it

With butterfly keyboards we first try a careful clean on individual failing keys, which sometimes solves it. If the switches themselves have failed, the lasting fix is a replacement top case assembly, which comes with a new keyboard and battery.

We fit UK-layout keyboards as standard and test every key, the backlight and Touch ID (where fitted) before returning the Mac.

Before you bring it in

Avoid prising off keycaps yourself, as the clips break easily. A quick note of which keys stick or repeat is all we need.

Questions we’re often asked

What parts do you use?

We tell you before fitting whether a part is an Apple original, a tested part recovered from a donor machine, or a high-quality compatible part, and the price reflects which you choose.

Does the battery need replacing too?

Not always. On this model the battery is held with adhesive in the top case, so we test it first and only quote for it if it’s worn or damaged.

Is there a warranty?

Yes, our repairs come with a warranty on the work and parts. Ask us for the terms that apply to your repair.
