Mac Repair London carries out a battery replacement on the MacBook 12-inch Retina from our Central London workshop, for home users and businesses.
The terraced battery cells are glued into the top case. We replace them carefully with solvent removal, or with a top case assembly where the keyboard also needs doing. Because this is a fanless Mac, a failing battery often shows as throttling and slowness, not just short run time.
The 12-inch’s terraced battery was designed to fit the curved case, so replacements must match exactly. Generic batteries won’t fit.
About this model: The 12-inch MacBook (A1534) was Apple’s thinnest laptop: fanless, with one USB-C port and the first butterfly keyboard. That single port handles charging, data and video, so port faults are serious.

How we do it
Before quoting, we check the battery’s cycle count and condition, and test the charger and charging port, because a charging fault can look exactly like a dead battery.
Adhesive holds the pack to the case, so patience matters more than speed. We protect the trackpad and speaker cables while the old cells come out.
Once it’s in, we run a charge and discharge check, confirm macOS reports the battery as normal, and send the old one for recycling.

Before you bring it in
Check System Information (or System Settings > Battery on newer macOS) for the cycle count and condition, and jot them down. If the case is bulging, stop charging it and bring it in straight away.

How long will the new battery last?
A new battery should give you close to the run time it had when new, and typically lasts several years with normal use. Keeping it away from long periods at 100% charge and high heat helps it age more slowly.
