About this model: The 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro (A1398) is still a capable quad-core machine. The 2012 and early-2013 models with NVIDIA GT 650M graphics are prone to video faults; later dual-GPU models also get graphics problems.

How we do it
The SSD blade in this model can be removed and read in a compatible adapter on our recovery system, so a dead logic board doesn’t usually mean lost data.

Before you bring it in
Don’t run disk repair tools or reinstall macOS, as both can overwrite what we’re trying to save. Note which files matter most and whether FileVault was switched on.
