With soldered, hardware-encrypted storage, data can only be recovered from an A2338 by repairing the original board. We do that in-house.
The A2338 was often used as a work laptop. If it was managed by an employer (MDM), check with your IT team first: they may hold backups or require the data to be handled a certain way.
About this model: The 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 (2020) and M2 (2022) shares model number A2338 and the older Intel-era chassis, complete with Touch Bar and a fan. It’s reliable, but the screen is as vulnerable to pressure cracks as the M1 Air, and the Touch Bar can fail after spills.

We start by finding out why the Mac won’t start, which is often a power fault rather than failed storage. Once it boots, we copy your data before doing anything else.

Before you bring it in
Stop using the Mac if a drive is clicking or it keeps restarting, as each attempt can make recovery harder. Make a list of the folders that matter most so we can prioritise them, and have your login password to hand, because the storage is encrypted.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you take the drive out and read it in another computer?
Not on this model. The storage is encrypted with keys held by the Mac’s own security hardware, so it can only be read through the original board. That’s why we repair the board rather than replace it.
Is there a warranty?
