MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 & M2 (2020–2022) Keyboard Replacement

Apple MacBook Pro

Need a keyboard replacement for your MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 & M2? We carry out this work in-house at our London workshop, with a fixed quote before we start.

The keyboard and Touch Bar are part of the top case. Spills are the main reason for keyboard or Touch Bar failure. We replace the top case assembly or repair the keyboard and Touch Bar connection where practical.

If only the Touch Bar has stopped working, it can sometimes be a software or connection issue rather than failed hardware. We test that first, because it’s a much cheaper fix.

About this model: The 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 (2020) and M2 (2022) shares model number A2338 and the older Intel-era chassis, complete with Touch Bar and a fan. It’s reliable, but the screen is as vulnerable to pressure cracks as the M1 Air, and the Touch Bar can fail after spills.

Signs it needs a keyboard replacement

  • Keys not working
  • Touch Bar blank
  • Touch ID not recognised
  • Backlight fault

How we do it

The keyboard is riveted to the top case. We either fit a complete top case assembly (which includes the keyboard and, on many models, a new battery), or remove the rivets and secure a new keyboard, depending on which is better value for your machine.

We fit UK-layout keyboards as standard and test every key, the backlight and Touch ID (where fitted) before returning the Mac.

Before you bring it in

Tell us which keys fail and whether there was a spill. On this model, a spill often affects more than the keyboard, and it’s cheaper to know that at the start.

Which model do you have?

This page covers the MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 & M2 (2020–2022) (MacBookPro17,1 / Mac14,7; A2338). The A-number is printed in tiny text on the base, near the hinge. You’ll also find the model in Apple menu > About This Mac. Not sure? Bring it in and we’ll identify it for you.

Price

We give you a fixed quote for your exact model after a free initial assessment, before any work starts. All prices are subject to inspection, and nothing is done without your approval.

Questions we’re often asked

What parts do you use?

We tell you before fitting whether a part is an Apple original, a tested part recovered from a donor machine, or a high-quality compatible part, and the price reflects which you choose.

Does the battery need replacing too?

Not always. On this model the battery is held with adhesive in the top case, so we test it first and only quote for it if it’s worn or damaged.

How much does it cost?

See the price section above. We always quote before starting, and if we can’t fix it, you don’t pay for the repair.
