Need data recovery for your MacBook Air Retina (2018–2020, Intel)? We carry out this work in-house at our London workshop, with a fixed quote before we start.
The SSD is soldered and encrypted by the T2 chip, so recovery depends on repairing the original logic board. We do that in-house, then transfer your data.
If the Retina Air had FileVault on, you’ll need your password even once the board is repaired. If FileVault was off, the T2 still encrypts the drive, but the Mac unlocks it automatically once it’s working.
About this model: The Retina MacBook Air from 2018–2020 (A1932 and A2179) has the T2 chip, soldered storage and memory, and a battery glued in place. The 2018–2019 A1932 has the butterfly keyboard; the 2020 A2179 has the more reliable scissor keyboard.
Signs it needs data recovery
- Dead laptop
- Liquid damage
- Board failure
- Won’t boot
How we do it
Recovery here is really a board repair with a different goal. We only need the Mac working long enough to unlock the encrypted storage and copy everything to a new drive.
Whether it’s family photos, accounts, a thesis or a year of client projects, we list what we’ve recovered so you can check it before it’s copied to your new drive.
At a glance
| Years | 2018–2020 |

| Processor | Intel Core i3/i5/i7, T2 |

| Memory | Soldered to the logic board |
| Battery | Held with adhesive |
| Power / charging | Two Thunderbolt 3 ports |
Before you bring it in
Stop using the Mac if a drive is clicking or it keeps restarting, as each attempt can make recovery harder. Make a list of the folders that matter most so we can prioritise them, and have your login password to hand, because the storage is encrypted.
Which model do you have?
This page covers the MacBook Air Retina 13-inch (2018–2020, Intel) (MacBookAir8,1 / 8,2 / 9,1; A1932, A2179). The A-number is printed in tiny text on the base, near the hinge. You’ll also find the model in Apple menu > About This Mac. Not sure? Bring it in and we’ll identify it for you.
Price
Logical data recovery from £150 + VAT; physical recovery from damaged drives from £350 + VAT. All prices are subject to inspection, and nothing is done without your approval.
Questions we’re often asked
Can you take the drive out and read it in another computer?
Not on this model. The storage is encrypted with keys held by the Mac’s own security hardware, so it can only be read through the original board. That’s why we repair the board rather than replace it.
Is there a warranty?
Yes, our repairs come with a warranty on the work and parts. Ask us for the terms that apply to your repair.
