The M4 Mac mini’s storage is on a removable module, which makes larger third-party modules possible. It isn’t plug-and-play: the Mac has to be restored in DFU mode from another Mac afterwards, and everything on it is erased, so we back up and restore your data as part of the job. We’ll confirm on inspection whether the same applies to the 2026 M6 and M5 Pro models before quoting.
About this model: The redesigned 5-by-5-inch Mac mini arrived with M4 and M4 Pro in 2024, and the 2026 update brought the M6 and M5 Pro chips. The power button is on the underside, and the M4 model’s storage sits on a removable module rather than being soldered.

How we do it
Storage modules on this design are tied to the Mac’s security chip, so after fitting, the Mac is restored from another Mac in DFU mode. That process erases it, so a verified backup of your data comes first and we restore it afterwards.
Once fitted, we either restore your existing system or install the newest macOS your model supports, then run a full read/write test and check the drive’s health reporting before handing it back.

If the fault is a manufacturing defect and your Mac is within Apple’s warranty or AppleCare+, Apple is usually the cheapest route and we’ll tell you so. Accidental damage, spills and anything outside cover is where we can help, often faster.
Will I lose my files?
No. We clone or back up your data before any upgrade and check everything is in place afterwards.
Is it worth upgrading this model?
If the machine is otherwise healthy, yes. Storage and memory upgrades are the cheapest way to make an older Mac noticeably quicker, and we’ll tell you honestly if we think a replacement would be better value.
