On 14 September 2026 Apple released macOS 27, called macOS Golden Gate. It is the first version of macOS that only runs on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and later). If your Mac has an Intel processor, it can’t install it. Here is what that means and what you can do.
Which Macs are affected?
Apple announced at its WWDC conference in June 2025 that macOS Tahoe 26 would be the final major macOS version for Intel-based Macs. The last Intel models that run Tahoe, and so miss out on macOS 27, are:
- MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019)
- MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- iMac 27-inch (2020)
- Mac Pro (2019)
Older Intel Macs already stopped getting new macOS versions earlier. To check which you have, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. If it shows Chip (for example Apple M2), you have Apple silicon. If it shows Processor with an Intel name, you have an Intel Mac.
Does my Intel Mac stop working?
No. Your Mac keeps working on the macOS version it has now. It just won’t get macOS 27 or the features that come with it. Over time, some apps will stop supporting older macOS versions, so it’s worth planning ahead rather than waiting for something to stop working.
Repair, keep or replace?
- If your Intel Mac does what you need, a repair can keep it going for a good while yet. Batteries, screens, keyboards and liquid damage are all things we fix.
- If you’re moving to an Apple silicon Mac, make sure your files are safe first. On 2018 and later MacBooks the storage is part of the logic board, so if the old Mac won’t start we repair the board to reach your files.
- If you already have an Apple silicon Mac, remember that the processor, memory and storage share one board. A board fault stops everything, including access to your files, and we repair these boards at component level.
Not sure what’s best for your Mac? Tell us what it’s doing and we’ll give you honest advice for free, without opening it. If a technician needs to open it to find the fault, the diagnostic is £45 + VAT, and you get a quote before any work starts.
