Need your iMac G5 fixed in London? We repair every generation of Mac, and this is a model we see week in, week out.
The iMac G5 is the last PowerPC iMac and the first with the all-in-one-behind-the-screen design. The first two revisions are known for bulging capacitors on the logic board and for power supply failures, which Apple once covered under a repair extension. Today we repair these at component level: recapping the board, replacing or repairing the power supply and swapping failing hard drives. The back cover comes off with three screws, making it one of the easier iMacs to service.
Common faults we fix
- Won’t start, or starts then shuts down (capacitor failure)
- Vertical lines or distorted video
- Power supply failure
- Hard drive failure
- Loud fans from dust build-up

Before you bring it in
If it starts at all, back it up first. Then note the symptoms, any error messages and anything that happened just before, such as a drop, spill or update.
Which model do you have?
This page covers the iMac G5 (17 & 20-inch, 2004–2006) (PowerMac8,1 / 8,2 / 12,1; A1058, A1076, A1144, A1145). On a PowerPC Mac, open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, then More Info to open Apple System Profiler. Not sure? Bring it in and we’ll identify it for you.
Price
We give you a fixed quote after a free initial assessment, before any work starts. The initial assessment and advice are free, as long as we don't need to open your Mac. If a technician needs to open it and spend time diagnosing the fault, or you need a report for an insurance claim, it is booked in as a diagnostic at £45 + VAT (£54). All prices are subject to inspection, and nothing is done without your approval.
Questions we’re often asked
Is a Mac this age worth repairing?
It depends what you use it for. For recovering data, running legacy software or keeping a working studio setup, often yes. We give you the cost upfront and an honest view on whether it makes sense.
Can you fit an SSD while it’s here?
Yes. This model uses a standard sata drive, and swapping to an SSD at the same time is often the best-value upgrade you can make.
Is there a warranty?
Yes, our repairs come with a warranty on the work and parts. Ask us for the terms that apply to your repair.
