iBook G4 Logic Board Repair

iBook G4 logic board

The iBook G4 has one famous fault: its ATI graphics chip loosens from the logic board as the solder under it cracks. The result is a blank screen, lines or a picture that comes and goes when the case is pressed.

How we fix it

Pressing on the case or heating the chip can bring it back briefly, but it doesn’t last. We rework the chip’s connection properly, then test the iBook under load. We also repair power faults, failed DC-in boards and liquid damage.

Worth knowing

If the iBook still starts occasionally, back up your files the next time it does. The hard drive is separate from the logic board, so even if the board can’t be saved, we can copy your data directly from the drive.

Price

Non-complex board repairs from £165 + VAT; complex repairs (liquid, lightning or GPU faults) £450 + VAT. The initial assessment and advice are free, as long as we don't need to open your Mac. If a technician needs to open it and spend time diagnosing the fault, or you need a report for an insurance claim, it is booked in as a diagnostic at £45 + VAT (£54). All prices are subject to inspection, and nothing is done without your approval.

Questions we’re often asked

The screen works when I press near the trackpad. Is that the graphics fault?

That’s the classic sign. Pressure briefly reconnects the chip; a proper repair stops it happening.
