iMac 21.5 & 27-inch Unibody (2009–2011) Graphics (GPU) Repair

Apple iMac

If your iMac Unibody (2009–2011) needs graphics (GPU) repair, our London technicians can help, usually with a quote on the same day you bring it in.

The graphics card on these iMacs is on a removable MXM module on many models, which makes repair or replacement possible. The 2011 27-inch with the Radeon HD 6970M has the most failures. Symptoms include lines, a dark screen at start-up and crashes. We test, then repair or replace the module.

About this model: The 2009–2011 unibody iMacs (A1311 21.5-inch and A1312 27-inch) have the magnetically held glass, which makes getting inside easier than later glued models. They have four RAM slots behind a door and a 3.5-inch hard drive.

Signs it needs graphics (GPU) repair

  • Black screen after chime
  • Artifacts
  • Kernel panics

How we do it

On this Mac the graphics hardware sits on a separate card or module, so we test it in isolation, repair or replace it, and clean the cooling path so the new card doesn’t overheat.

Before anything is done, we explain the cost against the value of your machine, and if a repair doesn’t make sense, we’ll still help you get your data off.

Before you bring it in

If it only fails when warm, mention it: heat-related graphics faults behave differently from a completely dead chip.
